[DeTomaso] ZF Drip

Dave. I don't recall the torque I used, but 12-14 sounds right. Mine still
has a very slow drip, about one drop per week. I am not going to try to fix
it. I'm told that with the paper gaskets, as I have, and the synthetic gear
lube (Redline) that once the drip starts, the only way to stop it is replace
the gaskets, and that means pulling the ZF as you cannot get the long bolts
out with the trans in the car.

Good luck.
Mike

Hi Mike,
I'm chasing my ZF drip right now.
I have the case all cleaned up and it's clearly 2 of the 4 bottom cover
bolts that are leaking.
I'm going to try the back off and re-torque next.
Did you use 12 ft-lb when you did yours?
I see JohnT's number was 14 ft-lb.
Did you cure it and what lube did you refill with?
Synthetic is reputed to be more pervasive.
tks

After the ZF is drained, remove the offending bolts and clean the bolts and

holes with brake cleaner. Then coat the bolt threads with YamaBond 4 (

available at your Yamaha dealer) and retorque. This is your best chance at

sealing the leak.

As an FYI, Quella does not use the gasket in question and only uses YamaBond

in that application. I have followed that advice on many rebuilds and no

leaks at the bottom plate todate.

Good Luck

JT

Last year when I had the motor rebuilt and had the ZF out, I pulled the

bottom plate to check for safety wiring, and with a couple of new paper

gaskets from one of the vendors, replaced the plate. Since then I have

had

a slow seepage (one or two drops per month) from one of the plate bolts

near

the long cross bolts until about a month ago.

Now, especially after a drive when things are warmed up, I'll have a spot

about 2" across on the garage floor the next morning. I've checked the

torque on the plate and long bolts, and they are fine. I recall getting a

reply last year when I expressed initial concern about the seepage that

once

the paper gaskets start to leak, there is no cure save replacing them,

which

means pulling the ZF as the long bolts cannot be removed while the trans

is

in the car.

Any thoughts/comments here from the forum. I'll check the fluid level

more

often, but looks like I'll have to pull the ZF this fall and replace the

gaskets again.
