[DeTomaso] up size wheels and tires

Dear Boyd,

Hmm. Pantera International Spring 2002 no. 110 has
an article on page 20 about my friend, Jim Duncan's Pantera. He used
Mustang 17" wheels. Specifically, he used 1997 Cobra R model chrome five
spokes. The front 17 x 8 wheels fit perfectly without any spacers. The
rear 17 x 11" wheels fit perfectly without any spacers.

I liked the look and the price. Jim kindly offered
to permit me to mount his wheels on my Pantera to double check the fitment.
The good news is that the front wheels did fit fine. The bad news is that
the rear wheels did NOT. Close inspection showed interference between the
wheel and the lower a arm support. My car has stock brakes. Jim's car
has aftermarket brakes which change the offset a quarter of an inch and
permit the serendipitous fit without spacers. I looked into spacers. The
good news is that they are available. The bad news is that there are not
very many 1/4" spacers from my quickie search of the 'net. The other bad
news is that they're rather frowned upon for track events and I did witness
a turbo 911 slide, break off the studs, roll and suffer significant damage
from an overstressed wheel spacer.

More bad news. If you go to the A.F.S. ( Autumn
Fleet Sales) website, then you will see that there is more than one
size-offset-backspace for the 17 x8 and 17 x11 wheels. I can't remember
what the correct Pantera numbers are, but you'd have to do a bit of homework
to see what comes closest to the proper offset as well as the spacer, too,
if you have a stock rear brake set up.

If you don't like the Campy look, then I would strongly
suggest you call Pantera Performance Center at 303-660-9798 (or is it
9897?) Ask Becky to send you a brochure about their wheels. There is more
than one style available and if you order from PPC, then it will be a bolt
on-no headache deal. The only issue is that they are pricey, but worth it.

                                 Warmest regards, Chuck Engles
