No.
The event is happening for sure. We are still finalizing the details, but
the pricing is set--Larry Finch has that data, and I'm sure he'll announce it
here shortly. Among the details yet to be hammered out is the chosen track
layout. Although intuitively one would expect that the longest track would be
the best track, we are getting feedback from those who know the place that if
you run the full track, the back half is slow, exhausting, and behind a hill
so spectators can't watch. The full track has 29 corners or something like
that, and by the time you get back to the front straight you're wiped out and
annoyed at having spent a bunch of time puttering around in 2nd gear.
We are seeking a FAST, SMOOTH, FLOWING track layout that will favor
high-horsepower, relatively heavy cars like ours. We don't want to stage a go-kart
event for Panteras. It may well be that the optimal solution involves using
only half the track, and going around it twice as often in a given amount of
time. (Since the full track is over four miles long, this isn't necessarily a
bad thing). So at some point in the near future, Larry Finch and I are
planning on driving up to Reno and conducting a recon, hopefully with tires on the
pavement (I have to guess there aren't too many track days there in January).
Unlike Pahrump, where to double the length of the track would require paying
double the costs, at RFR we are paying a fixed price for the track, whichever
configuration we use. So cost is not a factor in determining the track
layout--only quality. Whichever layout we choose will be run on both days--there
were rumors started by somebody that we were planning on running two different
configurations on the two days, and that was never true.
Once the layout choice is done, the information will be published on the PCNC
website, and in the POCA newsletter, registration will open etc.
Because the event is six weeks later than usual, event registration etc. will
be starting six weeks later than usual. So it's early days yet.
Mike
