[DeTomaso] modified port plates for 180's

Dear Mark,
Comments: port plates are "supposed" to work by "filling in"
the dead area in the lower part of the exhaust port
Supposedly there are some flow tests that
show improvement
Observations: exhaust flow is way different that intake port
flow velocity and exhaust flow is rather, well, explosive and high velocity.
I can't recall any actual dyno tests
on the benefits of intake and/or exhaust port plates in a 351C
Real news: Dan Jones happens to have a set of the bronze
exhaust Port Stingers and expects to test them in the famous Grand Cleveland
351C Dyno Extravaganza. If you can wait, then you should have some real
world data. If you would like to contribute to Dan's great work, then
email Dan to be directed to the PayPal account for donations.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Subject: [DeTomaso] modified port plates for 180's
I am interested if comments regarding the use of port plates to modify the
exhaust port so that it does not make a 90 degree turn exiting the head
perpendicular to the cylinder bore, but rather making a shallower turn which
results in the port comming out the top of the head adjacent to the valve
cover. The head would be wider than stock but not as wide as when you add
the width of the frist header bend. We try to make the intake as straight as
possible but I haven't seen anything about making the exhaust as straight as
possible.
Is there anything to be gained? If so what and how much?
This should work well with 180 degree headers.
Mark
