A cheaper way if you are getting away from a stock look would be to zip tie a GPS unit to the steering wheel.

Dave:

I changed to an electronic speedo by Autometer, their "Ultra Lite" series which is a 5" diameter instrument, which fit perfectly into the Veglia holes. My reason for doing so was it's ability to be calibrated to fit any tire diameter. All I have to do is drive a measured 2 miles, and that's it. Punch the calibrate button at the start, then punch it again at the end. All done.

The other requirement is the electronic sender. It's a "square wave" generator specifically built for our ZFs, which I bought for approximately $130 from Speedometer Service, Milwaukee, MI. It generates 16 pulses per revolution, which equates to 25,600 pulses per mile with our ZFs.

The other thing I did was to completely "tweak" my new Autometer tach, and speedo, such that they had the same "extras" that our original Veglias do. The indicator lights, turn signal flashing light, and all the rest. I also added some graphics to the speedo, the DeTomaso graphic, and others. To do that, my first step was getting the instruments apart. They're designed NOT to come apart. The original "factory serviced" device. But when you run something thru your table saw, you can get most anything apart. And Superglue is a miraculous chemical....

If you want pictures, etc., let me know as I documented my entire process. SOBill also did a new schematic for the LEDs that I used in place of the original colored plastic light guides.
