[DeTomaso] speedometer - electric conversion

I did exactly that; converted my original Veglia speedo to electric
operation. Unfortunately, I did it the most expensive way possible, rather
than the least expensive way, but it all worked out perfectly. The last
Pantera’s (the Si model) came with electric speedo’s. It looked to me like
the speedo’s were identical to the earlier speedo’s, except with black
bezels, so I bought one, along with the appropriate sending unit that screws
directly onto the ZF’s speedo drive. I bought it all directly from DeTomaso
and they were extremely helpful in making sure I got all the right parts.
Since the last Pantera’s used Getrag transaxles, my biggest concern was
making sure I got the correct sending unit. I did, indeed, get the correct
sending unit; however, the electric Si speedo bears no resemblance to the
older speedo’s. It’s a totally different design and only about 4 ¼” in
diameter. I called Bob Byars who suggested I send my original speedo and the
electric Si speedo to North Hollywood Speedometer & Clock Co. and see if
they could put the electric Si speedo’s “guts” into my original Veglia
speedo. To make a long story short, that’s exactly what they did and it
works perfectly. Here’s the good news: North Hollywood Speedo told me that I
should have talked to them before I bought the electric Si speedo because
they have VDO mechanisms that they could have retrofitted into my original
Veglia speedo in exactly the same way. They also have VDO sending units to
match and they were pretty sure that one could be adapted to the ZF. I hope
this info is helpful. North Hollywood Speedometer & Clock Co., (818)
