Probably not important at less than 6000 rpms; all the work on this was done
around 7000- first by Smokey Yunick on smallblock Chevs. And as far as
'drainback friction', painting the inside of the block and heads with red glyptal
works.... except for the problem of getting good adhesion to a used block.
Sometimes, even hot-solvent-spray won't fully extract old oil from porous cast iron.
Then the paint peels off in strips to clog passages and filters. NASCAR
racers don't paint iron blocks; instead, they grind the whole inside of a race
block smooth. Then any sharp edges are removed so workers can't cut themselves,
there's no paint to come loose, and they simultaneously remove sand pockets left
over from casting. Painting the inside of aluminum heads & blocks is not done
by anyone; they're normally not porous and paint insulates the aluminum-
negating one of aluminum's big advantages in heat transfer. Cheers- J DeRyke
