When that happens to me, I offer to buy it at the last price under my max bid - i.e. your $2K lower price.

After all, if someone hadn't bid it past my max bid, that's what would have won the auction.

They normally get pissed off and refuse, though.  Better to know they're dishonest before you fork over $$.
