Michael:
The real question is what is the FBS speed of your mother board? The Front
Bus Speed. That's what 'uses' that DDR2 or DDR3, or even plain old
DDR. Or
the slower or the faster units.
Also are you using a 64 bit operating system? Or a 32 bit? That determines
how much RAM can be used (addressed) by the OS. Windows 64 can use the
most, and I think that's 7 gigs... but you'll need to confirm that.
But
there's a problem with the more specialized drivers and Win 64. Microsoft
depends on the software, and hardware companies to provide the drivers for
their OS, and sometimes that's a real crap shoot. Finding the right 64 bit
driver for an uncommon piece of hardware might be impossible.... which means
you have to really do your homework before you pull the trigger on an OS
upgrade like going to 64 bits.
So you've got two things to think about, or rather investigate. What is
the
max speed that you motherboard can use in terms of RAM. Second, what is the
max amount of RAM that your mother board can utilize, and be utilized by
your OS. When I say "motherboard", you also have to confirm that the
BIOS
can handle that RAM speed too. You may find that the board can handle the
size and speed, but your BIOS can't. So you need to get the motherboard
manual out, and read the specs on it for RAM. Or go to their web site, and
see if they have an upgraded BIOS available that is a significant
improvement.
Something to think about is the newest Intel CPUs, the i7 chips. These have
the equivalent of 4 or more "processors" on the chip. They also do
NOT use
the front bus chokepoint anymore. In fact, if I were you, I'd leave things
alone until you can migrate to this next generation of CPU, and the
motherboard that can run it.
And if that's clear as mud, write me off list, and I'll send you some
more
information.
