[DeTomaso] Speedo question

If the speedometer has been apart, such as to replace the face plate,
etc.....

The speedometer has a tiny coil spring wrapped around the drive shaft that
the indicator needle is mounted on. The spring applies pressure to return
the needle to the 'at rest' peg, but also applies a resistance throughout
the range of the gauge. The amount of preload is determined by winding the
coil spring backwards during assembly and the correct amount has to be
guessed. Too much compression of the coil spring at the rest position will
result in a drastic reduction of the indicated speed throughout the range.
The trick is to apply just enough preload so that the needle barely rests
upon the stop.

I had to re-disassemble my speedometer twice to reposition the needle before
finally getting it right (which according to BBORR radar is spot on at 105
mph).

I think that if the problem was the cable, the needle would jump all over,
not just show a low speed.  If the gears at the ZF are stripped, I guess
that could slow low, but I think they would totally fail very soon.  My
guess is that the problem is in the speedometer.

Honest officer, my speedometer was reading 35 miles an hour.

I'd guess a problem in the cable, check the fitting at the ZF, the
routing and the connection at the speedo.

After that... .I think you'll have to pull the speedo.
