[DeTomaso] Oil Coolers (again)

Mike, I moved the oil tank to the rear of the engine compartment a year ago. I sacrificed some of the weight transfer I had gained but I succomed to pressure about it being unsafe in the passenger's floorpan, even though it never leaked a drop. I would have preferred to have left it there and built a containment wall around it, but the SS folks were probably going to modify their rule book again to prohibit this.
Now, if you look at NASCAR or Trans-Am cars most of them have the oil tank in the cockpit, that's where I got the idea. And personally, I'd rather have the oil fittings in my view so I know if they get loose. The other risk would be from a roll-over but I'm not convinced the stainless lines, AN fittings and steel oil tank would get cracked if properly secured in a full roll cage vehicle, but why take the chance for a 20 lb weight transfer (guess I'm getting soft).

I've considered running an air-oil cooler in the front, and also moving my dry sump tank to the front trunk for better balance.

What concerns me though, is an oil leak from the front could make for an interesting spin.

  >>>As opposed to the boring kind? :>)

Just look after the system, and ensure there are no leaks, and it's not a problem. If your oil cooler is leaking, it's a danger to you (and just as importantly, to others) no matter where it is located on the car.
