[DeTomaso] NPC - Mustang Miss/Stumble problem

Your symptoms sound fairly similar to the drivability problems I had with an
older 4.6 T-Bird. I changed out the MAF unit and everything was healed.
MAF sensors are not cheap ($150) but luckily the guy next door let me borrow
one off his T-Bird to check first.

YMMV

Subject: [DeTomaso] NPC - Mustang Miss/Stumble problem

All,

Sorry for the NPC, but I got a sick Mustang in the garage and I thot I would
tap the collective mind of the Pantera community to try to solve it :>)

Particulars are:

2001 Mustang GT, Automatic

4.6L V8 all stock

73000 miles

No prior mechanical issues

Problem: It idles fine and runs on the road as normal until I try to
accelerate gently as in normal traffic situations. It will then begin to
stumble and miss (there is never any backfire). If I down shift it so that
the engine goes to higher RPMs it will smooth out. Under wide open throttle
it seems to pull strong and normal (although I thot I might have felt a bit
of surging possibly once). With OverDrive "on" it stumbles under light
acceleration and with OverDrive "off" it stumbles under light acceleration
(but not as bad).

This problem occurred after several thousand trouble free miles driven
during relatively warm weather. We had our first cold snap (down into the
20s) just a week or two ago and on the first night that the car was driven
under these conditions this problem started. It had never done this before
at all.

The Check Engine Light is NOT on. The first time this stumbling/missing
occurred the CEL would flash a couple of times while the missing was
occurring but then it would go out. There has not been any CEL flashing or
staying on during any further start up and driving of the car, even during
the stumbling/missing under light acceleration.

What I've done so far:

1 Changed fuel filter

2 Added Dry Gas treatment to fuel

3 Added Lucas Fuel Injection system cleaner to fuel

4 Visually checked all cables and connectors for obvious defects, poor
connections, etc.. for Sparkpugs and Fuel injectors

5 Disconnected Battery for 15 minutes

Any insight would be greatly appreciated :>)
