Looks good. Will you be adding one of these?

Subject: [DeTomaso] Pantera Logo Project

The weather in the Northwest this time of year is pretty crappy. I've been
stuck in the garage doing little projects while it dumps rain outside. This
past weekend I was catching up on the forum and one topic discussed ultimate
garages and included several picture links. After checking out those
million dollar garages suddenly my teeny tiny 2 car garage seemed rather
inadequate! For a long time I have just been pushing stuff around in my
garage to make room when needed so I decided on Saturday I could at least
tidy up a bit to make myself feel better. I picked up some shelving at the
local house depot so I could organize and get junk up off the garage floor.
Part of my cleanup also involved re-painting the walls in gloss white to
help brighten the space. After I was done painting the walls were gleaming
and the space was much brighter but it seemed like something was missing. I
decided I needed something car related covering the walls to add some
excitement. I wanted something Pantera specific but I couldn't make up my
mind what to do. I looked online for Pantera posters or other car type
things I could hang on the wall but nothing jumped out at me (or cost too
much). I really like the Pantera script emblem on the back of the car so I
decided I would attempt to paint the image myself onto a blank wall. My
first step was to find an image of the Pantera emblem to copy. I was
hoping I could locate a stencil online but no one has made one that I could
find. I couldn't find a large enough image to print and use either. I
thought about free handing the letters but then remembered the old trick of
using shadows. I removed the Pantera script emblem from the back of the car
to use it to create my image. I set the emblem on an 8ft ladder rung, then
turned the garage lights off and shined a light at the emblem to cast the
image onto the wall (pic1) (pic2). I moved the ladder back and forth until
the image was clear enough and the overall size on the wall was where I
wanted it. Then I jumped up on my clothes dryer which sat right below where
I wanted the image and began to trace out the letters onto the wall with a
pencil (pic3). After that was done I turned the lights back on and began
fixing and free handing spots that were missed. I wanted to make sure
everything was scaled correctly so I got out a level and ruler and began
making sure the individual letters where all spaced and angled correctly.
It took me awhile to get the whole layout correct and looking like a close
approximation of the emblem. Fortunately the pencil drawing was erased
easily from the wall as it took me several attempts to get it right. Once
satisfied I could begin to paint, I used a lot of blue painters tape to
define the straight portions of each letter (pic 4). I figured it would be
easier to just get all the straight parts of each letter painted before I
attempted the curvy bits (pic5). After completing the straight portion of
each letter I removed all the blue tape(pic6). The hardest part of the job
was painting the curved portions of each letter. This is where I made the
most mistakes. I made a cardboard template to replicate the multiple small
indentations below each letter so they are all the same and look good. I
wasn't sure what color I was going to use when I started. I thought about
black or blue because the contrast of each color would be good on a white
wall. I finally decided to use orange paint to match the color of my
Pantera. I think if I were doing this again I would have made the image
bigger. I'm not going to make any money as a graphic artist but I think
the results turned out decent (pic7, pic8). I've been tempted to fix some
of the spots I don't like but I'll just leave it alone and call it good. I
have more wall space to cover so I might try to paint the De Tomaso emblem
next!
