In re-reading Bill Van Ess's original 1994 DeTomaso Registry, he makes
reference to 'at least 135 U.S- spec GTS's, and possibly 138 if all the body
srvice numbers were used'. 40 were titled as 1973s for CA sales while the
much-publicised 98 were all 1974s, and he mentions that he had 'Ford paperwork
in hand to prove this'- back in 1994. He was also the one who first noted
that all known U.S.-spec GTS cars used a 30XXX body service number. In '94,
he had located body service #30135 but had not at that time located body
service number 30001 to indicate Ford/DeTomaso had used every body service
number in between.
To my knowlege, he hadn't matched DeTomaso's THGT-serial numbers to the
body service numbers, which he theorized came from Ford. FWIW, in the serial
number sequence that begins with THPN, the 'PN' section refers to the car
model: a Pantera. The 'GT' in THGT refers to a GTS model Pantera.
For those still awake concerning this ancient thread, Bill Van Ess of
Michigan is still around, still at the same old e-mail <billvaness at juno.com> and
would likely be happy to talk about it off-line. There may even be some
"new" info.
