Matt,

Those were going to be my suggestions as well: shut off water to the heater
coil under the dash by either a set of valves or simply create a bypass hose
at the engine and feed it back into itself, make sure that if you leave the
existing hoses in place that you plug the ends to keep any critters from
going condo.  Secondly, Dynamat on the inside is easy to apply inside the
cabin on the firewall. more difficult on the engine side, if nothing else,
you can apply it to the center removable section very easily.  Thirdly,
while the conductive heat properties can't be completely minimized by common
household insulation, you can buy a hot water heater insulation blanket and
cut it up to create a liner for the backside of decorative trim panel behind
the seats to create a giant "heat barrier air layer", trapping the heat
inside that space and reducing the radiant properties of the
firewall somewhat, although on long jaunts, it will equalize eventually on
both sides.
