You don't have to mess with the shifter box (if you're referring to the box 
in the cabin that has the shift lever).

You have to disconnect the long rod (that passes through the trunnion) from 
the rearmost U-joint; once that's done, you can slide the old one off and 
the new one on, then reassemble.   Mark the pieces so that everything goes 
back in the same place, but be prepared to have to fiddle with the adjustment 
a bit afterwards.
