That's what I thought too.   However I looked at a '71 recently and it was 
an inch too short.   What may have happened with that car was that the owner 
heard that the early car dipsticks were too long so he automatically 
shortened his without measuring first????

Now that you mention it, I think you're right--I think the 'normal' early 
car dipstick that hasn't been modified is too long, not too short.
