Even if refilling the A/C causes cold air, don't expect it to last 'cause
leakage thru the 20+ ft of rubber lines is pretty high even in an all-new
system. Also, due to the Pantera's aerodynamics, above 100 mph, you may find
un-cold air coming out of the vents. Reason seems to be, the rear mounted
condenser depends on a following swirl of air to be sucked into and through the
A/C core, hitting the rear of the luggage tub and being deflected down to
the pavement. At higher speeds, the swirl is so far behind the rear bumper,
the A/C fan motor is trying to suck air out of a partial vacuum. And running
without the luggage tub often causes recirculation of hot air thats already
gone thru the A/C core once. All this combines with the Pantera's lack of an
over-pressure shut-off switch for the compressor, so blown hoses result.
FWIW, a stock Ford shut-off switch (sometimes called a safety switch) can
easily be adapted into the Pantera by an A/C shop. Good luck on your drive and
don't forget to add the POCA Membership roster to the glove compartment for
phone #s when things go wonky-- J Deryke
