The plastic housings are likely Hall's originals from the early '90s.
Aluminum take-apart housings are what all the vendors now sell, and their
advantage is having replacement center balls for various sizes of bars, saving one
from having to do a precision bore job on the whole assembly if you change
bar size, or get an original bar plated. Hall's originals had allen head
mounting capscrews on aluminum top plates, and the screw heads often got VERY
close to the outside u-joints- sometimes touching. All the aluminum ones use
countersunk flathead allens (which can be retrofitted to the plastic assembly
top plates). This gives more running clearance. Both work wonderfully well
on both front & rear bars IMHO although occasional greasing/oiling of either
type prolongs their life. I love my old Halls- J Deryke
