[DeTomaso] cleaning engine bay metal question, polished ZF won't polish easily

That's another reason to paint rather than polish.

As I've said before, J.T.'s ZF is one of the nicest I've seen.  No offense
to the polishers.

I know you don't want to hear this......

My guess, after you having polished it numerous times now, is that what 
you are seeing is the result of a microscopic pinhole in the finish, 
that has caused oxidation under the top coat (clear coat?) that is 
presumably already there. If this is the case, you'll never get them out 
without first stripping whatever is on top. But I've been wrong lots of 
times before. Good luck.
