Ms. Laurie,

I am confident that your TPR t-shirt attention had more to do with you and what was inside that TPR shirt than anything else. ;-]>

Subject: [DeTomaso] 2009 TOYOTA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH.. DON'T MISS IT SUNDAY!

What a long tiring but wonderful day!!! Early in the week I called the
Long Beach Grand Prix Customer Relations Office to see if there was any
discount to arrange to take my high school class there this Friday and was
pleasantly surprised to learn that there was a web site that offered free Friday
tickets. Thus we printed out tickets for all 25 of us and headed out this
morning at 8 am. With my stern warning, everyone was present even earlier
than the start of school.. a miracle in itself. We jumped the Metro bus
to the Redline Station, switched at 7th & Metro to the Blue Line and took
the long scenic route to Long Beach, a two hour trip. Since we had not
ordered lunches in enough advance timing, I had made big sheets of lavosh w/
turkey, cheese, lettuce and created an institutional sized platter of roll up
sandwiches yesterday. And since I had to be back to school for Open House
last night, I cooked the batter one of the girls prepared for cupcakes.
Voila lunch! All this planning w/ challenging reluctance from the other
teacher I team with who is NOT a car guy and who felt that 4 hours travel did
not warrant an hour and half visit to the LBGP. Well he may have become a
car guy now himself; I think he was quite impressed. Plus, I never saw the
kids have such a great time. Some of the students have already proclaimed
their love of cars and a desire to be mechanics; another had painted me an
awesome picture of hot rods that I have posted on the side of my desk. The
very best part of the day was the look in their eyes and their amazement at
hearing the sounds of the cars on the circuit. None had ever witnessed
such speed or so much excitement; indescribably different in person than on
TV. I have always loved the LBGP and attend religiously every year. It is
magically euphoric but this is the first time I got so much pleasure in
sharing it with so many young people who never had the opportunity before.
Since we couldn't find Danika, they took photos with the Cholula Models and
the girls with the cute Marines. They got their gratis bottles of hot
sauce... got temporary tattoos from Pit Transit Stop, beautiful bright red hats
with the American Flag from Firestone, key rings with little Toyota race
guys, K&N coloring books, some High Energy "NOS" kickapoo joy juice, not to
mention a 6 foot poster of a verrrry well endowed model with a shorty short
skirt...(hope I have a job come Monday). Then $25. value coupon for free
haircut or massage from SportClips and on and on. They begged me to take them
to the race Sunday but alas, how could I ever do that? So they settled
with a promise to return next year.
p.s. Shockingly as I was standing in line with a couple of the kids
waiting to play a game, a very nice man came over and surprised the heck out of
me by asking if I was single, gave me his card and told me to give him a
call. Whoa??? Ya think it might have been that I was wearing my Team Pantera
Race Shirt? We ran into him again and he asked if he could take a picture
of us and my student said.. wait.. let me take a picture of both of you. So
now I have a picture with this nice stranger. And here I'm the one who
tells them not to talk to strangers. Ooops.
My students were cracking up and teasing me on the way home..... Oooh la
la... "Ms. Basile has a new boyfriend."
In essence I was hoping to finally have someone to go to Pantera events
with but wouldn't you know it.. he's a Vette guy : )
Just wait 'til I have my beautiful P. car back tomorrow after long last...
then we'll see how life changes.

Signing off from (the always something wild & crazy going on) TOYOTA GRAND
PRIX OF LONG BEACH,
Laurie
