If the ZF was 100% drained, it should hold 3.4 Liters (7.5  pints) of fluid.
 
Between the gear housing at the rear and the diff housing are small  holes 
which slow down fluid transfer between housings. These holes prevent the  
gear housing going dry on long downhill's and the diff housing going dry on 
long  uphill's. They also make getting 100% of the old lubricant out a slow  
process requiring you to elevate the rear of car when draining.
 
That's what I think I know.
