They appear to have been made sequentially.   As the wheels were sand-cast 
(not pressure cast), the magohony molds had a finite life, and as the mold 
wore out, I imagine they took the opportunity to slightly improve the design 
for each subsequent issue.   There is a very pronounced progression of 
material (and presumably strength) from the early to the late wheels; the later 
wheels are probably measurably heavier than the earlier ones (although I've 
never compared them to confirm this).
