If you read the post more closely you would have seen he has a "sponsor"
some one else ( I don't know who but undoubtedly some commercial enterprise
who is sponsoring his car for the international exposure) Just like Viagra
sponsors Nascar cars, of US Fidelis ( the extended warranty
company sponsors Rusty Wallace and his son. The examples are to numerous to
list. This event is going to be covered by media all over the planet as well
as the cars being seen by hundreds of thousands or maybe even millions of
people along the route. It is great advertising and cheap by media
standards. It may also have been a case where the sponsor might have backed
out if he realized the car he was backing wasn't running well. When you
sponsor a car you want it to have good odds of finishing. I'm sure Robert
didn't want his sponsor to get wind of the fact that his car was not
running a few days before he had to leave.Boyd
P.S. It is not a race. It is a rally . In fact they say anyone (a
prticipant) that is encourages making it a "speed contest " will be ejected
with no refund of the entry fee. The object is to finish and to make it
through specific check points. They stop everynight along the way and have
all sorts of media events , parties, concerts etc. The participants get
hotel rooms and food all iving expenses covered as part of the entrance fee.
