All,

California has a sweet deal going. You can combat a ticket in writing,
before the fact. When you receive the citation in the mail, you are presented
with three options--plead guilty, plead innocent and request a court appearance,
or plead innocent and request to fight the ticket in writing.

The beautiful thing is, if you contest the ticket in writing, and lose, THEN
you get to appear in court to contest it AGAIN, so you get two chances to beat
it.

If you contest it in writing, you simply submit a written statement of the
facts as you see them. The issuing officer is then given a homework assignment
to generate a similar written statement of the facts as he sees them.

If he fails to do so, the charges are dismissed. And if he does decide to
do his homework, and you lose, then you get to face him in court.

I have had several friends who got speeding tickets here in the past few
years; they were cut-and-dry tickets where they were guilty as hell, caught on
radar etc. Every one was dismissed after submitting a written
statement--probably because cops hate homework and can't be bothered.

You might want to check to see if your state has a similar setup.

Mike (who will never take a dive again!)
