[DeTomaso] Fuel Gauge quit working

While we are on fuel gauges......

 

My gauge on start up sometimes is stuck on empty despite a full tank.  When I gently tap the gauge with my finger it then goes to appropriate mark on gauge.

 

Does this mean it will fail at some point or need cleaning internally?
