The Top Ten Panteras

With a sleek low-profile body designed by Tom Tjaarda and Ford's trusty 351 Cleveland V8 mounted amidships, the Pantera was Ford's answer to Italian exotics, and although they've seen some recent increases in value, they still offer a lot of bang for the buck. Here are the most expensive Panteras from the SCM Platinum database. Comment at the SCM Blog.

This Week's Featured Collector
Car Search!

Pontiac GTO, 1964-72

Arguably the first true American musclecar, the GTO was snuck into production in 1964 as an option package on the Tempest LeMans. Due to GM's ban on factory-backed racing in 1963, engine sizes were supposed to be limited to 300 cubic inches in midsized cars, but the powerful 389-ci GTO was a runaway success, selling over 32,000 the first year alone. 1966 and 1967 saw variations to the design, with vertically stacked headlamps that were to become Pontiac's trademark of the era, and 1968 saw a complete redesign, eventually including hideaway headlamps, The Judge package, and a number of Ram Air 400- and 455-ci engines. This week, we've unlocked 5,451 GTOs for you to cruise through.

We've added over 1,419 auctions to the Price Tracker this week!

Limited Edition Mille Miglia Print

Nicolas Hunziker has created an original painting of John Fitch's greatest international win from the 1955 Mille Miglia. The painting will be auctioned off by the Saratoga Automobile Museum during the Drive for Excellence dinner on May 16. All proceeds will go towards John Fitch.

Can't afford the original? No need to worry; 417 additional prints will be produced and sold. They measure 24"x36", are all signed and hand numbered, and will sell for $125. The first 100 prints are signed by John Fitch and will sell for $250. Proceeds from the sale of the prints will go to John Fitch as well.

Pre-orders are now being taken, with prints shipping toward the end of the month. For more info, visit: www.nicolashunziker.com.

 Stefan "Enzo Crash" Erikkson Arrested

Speaking of Ferrari crashes, Stefan Eriksson, who pretty much launched the "million-dollar crash club" when he piled his Enzo into a phone pole at an estimated 160 mph in Malibu in 2006, has made the news again. Eriksson was jailed on seven counts of suspicion of theft, assault and extortion last week in Uppsala, Sweden. He was deported to Sweden last year after serving a prison sentence in the U.S. after pleading no contest to drunken driving, embezzlement and illegal gun possession. Read more here.

Featured Affordable Classic
 DeTomaso Pantera: Ford's Sleeping Beasty

The DeTomaso Pantera was to be Ford's own Ferrari, sold through Lincoln-Mercury dealers. Quite a challenge in 1971, when it cost $10,000, about the same price as a Porsche Cayman today. More conventional than the unreliable Mangusta which preceded it, the Pantera had a pressed-steel unit chassis instead of a backbone chassis and sensational looks, courtesy of American designer Tom Tjaarda, then at Ghia. Like the Mangusta, the Pantera also sported a Ford V8-a 351 Cleveland rather than a 302-again mated to a ZF transaxle, similar to the unit used in the GT40. Early Panteras were no improvement on the casually assembled Mangusta, though deficiencies in seating, cooling, assembly, brakes, electrical systems, and air conditioning were corrected in later years. Useful performers, they are dogged by rust and pre-purchase inspections are essential. Read Rob Sass' Article from the August 2008 issue of Sports Car Market magazine. Auction Highlight

Encouraged when Barrett-Jackson sold $9 million of GM's heritage cars at the Scottsdale Auction in January 2009, The General is sending another 100 prototypes, one-offs and oddities from its collection to be sold at B-J's West Palm Beach Auction, taking place April 9-11. This may be a drop in the bucket against the $13.4 billion in government aid GM received in December, but it shows the corporation is revisiting its organization with the idea of trimming every aspect.
