Subject: Re: [DeTomaso] Trunk heat question
IMHO, all Italian cars are a work-in-progress, including Ferraris. The
Pantera is a rather small car- slightly smaller than a Fiero- with a big powerful
engine and all its accessories stuffed into a little package. A Panteras's front
trunk gets toasty due to the radiator exhausting directly against the rounded
front of the trunk, regardless of hood vents. Some guys add insulation to the
rounded front. In back, the headers and exhaust system heat the trunk liner,
plus a portion of the heated air from the radiator (the part that doesn'r exit
thru the front wheelwells) goes under the car and splits, part exiting thru
the rear 'window' opening and part continues back to join the heat exhausted
from the A/C condenser against the rear of the liner. Insulation on parts of the
fiberglas liner is advised if you intend to carry perishables such as
chocolate or booze, or pressurized hair sprays. Finally, some aftermarket tire
inflators use PROPANE as the propellent! One member had such a pressurized tire
inflator 'cook off' inside his trunk liner at 7000 ft of altitude; the explosion
dented the expensive trunk lid and broke the latch. To check for such
DOT-legal hand-grenades, look for a warning label -Extremely Flammable!- and dump it
instantly if you find such! Good luck- J DeRyke
