[DeTomaso] Air Conditioning Question- Specifically Regarding Replacement of the Expansion Valve... Or Not...

FWIW, R-12 and R-134a are reputed to use a different expansion valve. The
valves themselves are extremely rugged, being all-brass. Under an allen nut on
the input side is a small shuttle with a spring, so perhaps the spring strength
is what changes for more (or less) pressure with the two freons.
If the shuttle is free to move and the metal diaphragm is not perforated, the
valve is OK. One other thing- my R-134a valve had no screen filter above the
nut and shuttle- someone told me this was to promote higher freon flow. I
added the cleaned up screen from my R-12 valve to the new one anyway, because a
filter seems important in the lines somewhere!
Finally, word is, U.S suppliers may be changing air conditioning fluid
AGAIN from R-134a to "something else". Damn, I wish the politicians would get out
