[DeTomaso] Starter Woe's

Novice here... Today I turned the key and just heard a grinding sound. Replace the starter? Details: 13.5 volts at battery, lights work, horn works, shorted the solonoid with pliers and it tried to crank. Also noticed clutch slippage in 4th & 5th gears, New clutch next.  I have a great mechanic but he's expensive as hell If I can do the starter I'd be gratefull. Advice welcome & thanks in advance Recommend a starter anyone???
