Don,

Timing and heat come to mind. You know how to check your timing, so let's
skip that. Heat, the normal starter motor has bushings at each end of the
armature shaft. When the get hot they expand. If they are a bit worn to
start (no pun) with they can become so loose that the armature starts to hit
the field windings and will not spin. They make heat shields for starters.

You can always to amp draw and voltage drop tests to help you with finding
the problem.

Most things can be fixed by cleaning all the connection points too.

What is the best modification/change to help hot starting conditions?  I
already have the large welding cable from the battery to the solenoid.

Replace battery (I have an Optima about 8 years old)
Move battery to the back
Change starting to a gear reductino starter

Other?
