I don't know why he goes through that trouble. He turns the rod down to fit
an SAE-sized rod end. But the stock rod is exactly 18mm and is a perfect
fit with an 18mm rod end. No turning required!
Granted, 18mm rod ends aren't as easy to come by but they CAN be had. I
helped Stephane Bergeron cook up just such an arrangement on his car (we spent
half the day driving around looking for an 18mm rod end; he lives in a somewhat
rural area outside of Paris and such things aren't easy to get as a result).
He had painted his shift rod, and the paint buildup prevented free movement,
but we carefully sanded the area down to bare metal where the trunnion engages
and then polished it smooth, and after a shot of lubricant, it works like
glass. :>)
