[DeTomaso] Another reason to drive a Pantera

I drove my wife's car to Dallas this week (from Houston).

Her car (2000 Boxster-S) was making weird noises. She wanted me to take it, so she could take the Honda to San Antonio.

The weird noise sounded like a bearing going out - either the throwout bearing or maybe the water pump or alternator.

Yesterday, on the way back to the hotel, it overheated, complete with steam.

I figured, no big deal, right? At least I knew where the problem was. I was almost at the hotel when it started steaming, so I just parked it.

This morning, I filled it with water. And filled. And filled. And watched the water pour out on the ground.

Okay, so I have a hole where it doesn't belong.

$750 for a new water pump, a new belt, and labor. The quoted price for the pump was $400.

That's ridiculous.

I have a 351C water pump on a shelf. It is brand new (reman probably). I'm sure it was less than $50.

For $750, I can buy a complete running Chevy 307 to replace my 351C.

I will never complain about repair costs on the Pantera again. Come to think of it, I don't I've ever complained about spending money on my toys. That's someone else's job.

Will.
