True--Kar Kraft was a custom shop that was wholly owned by Ford.   They did 
most of Ford's special projects during that time, including designing and 
building the T44 four-speed transaxle used on the Mk II GT40s (made quickly and 
cheaply by using standard Ford four-speed internals).
