Not too complex; you'll need at least dash-6 lines and aeroquip fittings, and
depending on your drivings habits & where you live, maybe an oil thermostat
so warm-up is faster & you don't over-cool the oil in Winter. More engine fires
occur from loose or wrong fittings on oil or fuel lines added by home
mechanics so be very sure you use the best possible parts & that they're tight! Be
aware that most air-to-oil coolers have been found to not be worth the price of
hauling them around unless you cut holes in the Pantera body to duct air into &
out of the cooler. Water-to oil coolers are much better, require no ducts
and allow placement almost anywhere. Two brands work: the Aeroquip/Laminova
tubulars and the welded-box Fluidynes, both in their largest sizes for big V-8s.
The Laminova can be disassembled for cleaning while the Fluidyne cannot. This
means that if the coolers are on an engine that blew up, metal shards will stay
in the Fluidyne, to come out and waste the replacement engine, too. This is
also why one NEVER buys a used welded oil cooler.
As for pre-start lubing, the simplest way is to add the autocrosser's friend-
an accumulator. This uses a 1-2 qt cylinder with an internal piston or
bladder to build up pressure from the engine oil pump, with a check valve & manual
or electric solenoid valve to apply it to the bearings the next time you want
to fire up. The 1st time, an air compressor can apply the needed pressure and
after that, its automatic. No secondary pump or drive belt hassles involved.
Good luck- J Deryke
