[DeTomaso] NPC: Snap-On socket design

By Definition a six-point socket is -not- necessarily an impact  
socket.  Impact sockets are generally made a little differently in  
metal content and/or forging.

Yes, a six point will have better engagement, mostly because it has to  
-displace- more metal on the corner of a nut or bolt before it rounds  
off.  But they -can- round off.

We're not talking about the difference between 12-point and 6-point  
sockets.  We're talking about a design feature where the socket is not  
cut in a strictly hexagon shape or 12-point straight-cut shape, but  
instead is cut in such a manner that the pressure of the socket is not  
at the edge of the nut or bolt, but rather back from the edge to try  
and prevent rounding.

Look at the square near the bottom left of the page.
This is for a 12-point socket, but the six-point uses essentially the  
same design in just six sides.  It's a lot more difficult to round a  
nut or bolt with a Snap-On socket but it -can- happen.  They key is  
that the initial pressure is not at the edge, but back from the edge.
