[DeTomaso] Gas gauge post new fuel sender

Bill,

That depends on why the gauge reads wrong, doesn't it? If it's due to the float arm being bent it'll work OK but if it's due to resistance mismatch then the light will now probably not come on at all.

Clay, did the light come on just before the gauge read empty or not?

  Tomas,

  I don't think so.

The warning light is a small switch near the end of the downward travel of the float arm. The switch is an integral part of the sensor mechanism. Bending the float rod will not affect the sensor or the switch.

Bending the float arm down only changes the position of the float relative to the sensor. The problem now is that when the float is floating in 1/4 tank of fuel, the float is too low relative to the sensor and the sensor indicates Empty. Bending the float rod so the float moves down will cause the sensor to indicate a greater tank contents when the float rises to sit on top the fuel.

If you know you have 1/4 tank of full, bend the float rod down (in this case) until the gauge reads 1/4 tank. The low fuel warning light will work normally. You must hold the float rod in both hands and bend it between you hands. The sensor/switch mechanism is quite delicate (flimsy?) not to mention expensive.
