And the car was of course not fast enough to get away from the wing to get a 
clear view.

Late cars has the interior mirror glued to the windscreen.

My mirror was lacking the plastic trim around the mirror and had been
glued together. The mounting position as also such that the only thing
you could see was the wing.

I got a nice mirror from an audi a6 and checked out a suitable position
before gluing it to the windscreen. It now works perfectly, and I have
full view between the decklid and wing, and it vibrates only slightly at
some rpms.
