Your setup will work fine as described- its similar to Charlie McCalls. But
due to another horrible mismatch between the stock Italian gauge and the U.S
sender, don't expect any relation between the readings. Your new gauge will
usually be within 2% of true while the stock gauge almost always reads low-
sometimes, up to 50% low. I once borrowed 10 brand new senders from a vendor and
tried them one after another on our car. I got 8 different answers, all of which
were lower than a mechanical gauge mounted on a tee to the same source. I have
a permanently attached mechanical gauge mounted in back, with the stock
electric gauge sender on a tee to the same source. The stock dash gauge only tells
me if the engine is running- no more. If I really want to know the true
pressure, I raise the decklid and look. I did this in the early '90s; no problems so
far.
If you attach a sender to the port next to the fuel pump, the reading will be
about 20% higher than what the same gauge will read attached to the rear
port; the front one sees pressure coming straight out of the pump while the rear
one sees pressure at the far end of one of the most convoluted oiling systems
ever put in a performance engine.
A tight engine with an accurate gauge will show about 20-30 psi at 900 rpm
idle and around 60-75 psi at 4000 rpms, both readings with the engine hot. If an
accurate gauge shows much less, order a new short block now.... Good luck,
