I just talked to Larry about his carbs. The one that I have is a
first-generation version, built by the Holley custom shop about ten years ago. The
crappy one Charlie (and others) got was built by them after they made some
unannounced design changes, which caused Larry to fire them. The one Jack has is
likely the third-generation, current model which has been subtly improved
several times over the years, and has more and better features than the one that I
have on my car.
They are actually built to Larry's specifications by an outfit called
Quickfuel, which is a company formed by the former marketing manager of Holley in
conjunction with some of the technicians from Holley's custom shop. They set up
their own business literally right down the street from Holley, in Bowling
Green, KY. They are starting to really make a name for themselves, apparently.

He said that the current carb is not built on a 700 base like mine, but
instead uses a 650 base for better low-end response, but it's 'flowed' to 735. He
told me that they are using it as a 'smog' carb (since Reno has smog laws
that require testing), and that local Panteras that failed the smog test
subsequently sailed through just by putting the new carburetor on with no other
changes. Who would thunk that a custom Holley-type double-pumper would work as a
smog carb???
