[DeTomaso] New Carb - Recommendations?

Erik -
1) I don't think that carbs are "one-size fits-all" things. What works well
on one person's car doesn't work on another if the specs are different
2) Proof of this is Mike's comment regarding Larry Stock's carb. The
statement "dyno tested for a Pantera" I don't buy... What Pantera? A stock
'74 smog motor? A 71 HO? A 393ci stroker? The carb worked great on Mike's
car, and ran horribly on mine. I spent considerable time and effort swapping
out jets, etc trying to get it to run well. Nothing against Larry's carb,
but I don't think that any single carb will work well on significantly
different applications.
3) As a result, I second Chuck's recommendation to have yours rebuilt by a
carb specialist. I followed Chuck's recommendation and sent my brand-new but
poorly functioning carb to Chuck Nuytten, he took it apart, blueprinted it,
and replaced all the new parts with other new parts. The new engine ran
perfectly for the first time with that carb. I think you'd be money ahead
sending your old, worn out carb to a specialist and having them replace the
worn parts with new parts selected for YOUR engine. This assumes that you
know what you have - you need to tell them EVERYTHING - head flow, cam
specs, etc etc so that they can customize it. Having your carb rebuilt at
Nuytten will cost less than Larry's carb that you will subsequently have to
tune to your application.

There's my 2cents.

Dear Erik,

A suggestion: send your Holley to Chuck Nuytten Carbs for an overhaul and
upgrade. He has rebuilt two carbs for me and I was very impressed with his
thoroughness and with the carbs performance. They both work better than any
new Holley carb I have had. He is in Texas and has a website.

Warmest regards, Chuck Engles
