Auto helmets have nomex liners and other flame-retardant characteristics that 
motorcycle helmets don't have.   Unfortunately, your average car helmet has a 
smaller viewing port, which is one of the reasons I prefer motorcycle 
helmets.

Most sanctioning bodies will allow you to run with an "M" helmet but several 
will not.
