There is significant airflow in and around the engine compartment area of a Pantera. The engine doesn't
breathe anywhere near the amount of air that is available back there. The engine sources it's air from whatever
is around the intake. If it's like 95% of the Panteras out there with a round air cleaner on a carb, it breaths
air from around the top of the engine however it got there...and that's the problem. I cannot find the paper
but I remember the important part and that is on our cars you will gain more from a cooler air charge than you
will gain from any ram effect. This is for real world cars and speeds OK. The original cars had an extension
that led down below the hearder tubes. I think most cars of the era had those black flexible tubes leading
somewhere outside of the engine compartment as do all new cars. Since nobody likes the old blue Ford air cleaner housing, we've pretty much forgotten about that. I have twin filters on Weber style EFI and had planned to build an airbox for them but I think now it will be a effort to just provide cooler air to them with some ducting. I doubt I'll
ever feel a difference but it sounds like a fun project. I have a set of magnesium valve covers off one of the
TransAm Boss 302s with dzus mounts on the side where heat shields were attached above the header tubes.
Some simple panels could reduce the amount of air flowing through the headers and up to the intake area. I'll
let you know how it works. I may reach 175hp one of these days. Look out.
