Here's how the lines are routed:
 
>From the outlet of the compressor a large diameter hose carries  hot, high 
pressure gas to the top fitting of the condenser. The condenser  removes heat 
from the gas and converts it to a lower pressure, cooler liquid.  The liquid is 
routed via a smaller diameter hose from the condenser bottom  fitting to the 
drier. The desiccant material in the drier removes any water  from the liquid.
 
>From the drier, the smaller diameter hose goes forward to the  expansion 
valve where the liquid is metered into the evaporator to  be converted to a gas as 
it absorbs heat from the passenger compartment  air. The gas outlet of the 
evaporator is routed to the inlet of the compressor  where it is converted to a 
high pressure gas, hot gas. And the cycle  repeats.
 
You can tell the function of the hose you are looking at by it's  relative 
size: Larger hose is gas; smaller hose is liquid.
