Will,
Here's how the lines are routed:
>From the outlet of the compressor a large diameter hose carries hot, high
pressure gas to the top fitting of the condenser. The condenser removes heat
from the gas and converts it to a lower pressure, cooler liquid. The liquid is
routed via a smaller diameter hose from the condenser bottom fitting to the
drier. The desiccant material in the drier removes any water from the liquid.
>From the drier, the smaller diameter hose goes forward to the expansion
valve where the liquid is metered into the evaporator to be converted to a gas as
it absorbs heat from the passenger compartment air. The gas outlet of the
evaporator is routed to the inlet of the compressor where it is converted to a
high pressure gas, hot gas. And the cycle repeats.
You can tell the function of the hose you are looking at by it's relative
size: Larger hose is gas; smaller hose is liquid.
