Thanks for all suggestion. The thing with the broomstick worked fine. I have been having headache the whole weekend.

I think I have located the sound to the "right" head. The frequency indicates that it's a problem with one of the cylinders/pistons.

I'll try to remove the head next weekend and see what I can find...

  This is a very effective stethescope. Place your thumb over the end of the broom handle,
  slightly bent with your thumb knuckle sticking up over the end of the handle; place the other
  end of the broom handle on a part of the engine where you suspect the sound may be
  coming from and place your ear firmly against your thumb. Then try placing the broomstick
  on other non-moving parts of the engine (valve covers, bell housing, lower front side of block,
  etc) to narrow down the source of the sound.
