  This is a very effective stethescope. Place your thumb over the end of the broom handle, 
  slightly bent with your thumb knuckle sticking up over the end of the handle; place the other 
  end of the broom handle on a part of the engine where you suspect the sound may be 
  coming from and place your ear firmly against your thumb. Then try placing the broomstick 
  on other non-moving parts of the engine (valve covers, bell housing, lower front side of block, 
  etc) to narrow down the source of the sound.
