[DeTomaso] AC Expansion Valve Question

I am re-assembling my AC evaporator/heater core and I have the rotary R12 compressor.
I bought a new expansion valve from Byers (They only appear to have one type on the website) but it has R134a on it in small writing and of course I have an R12 system..
It fits the AC pipe flange perfectly.  
Does it matter what type of expansion valve you have (R12 or R134a??) ?  If so where can you get the R12 valve?
