That's odd - that's the same thing that happened to mine last year!
I bought a Sony replacement, since the original was Sony and I wanted it to
work with my CD changer. The new unit has a built in CD player as well which
works fine in vertical orientation.

My Kenwood with the cool self closing door which has radio delete graphics
on it has decided to go crazy on me. I can't turn it off or turn it down.
Its loud. It has become Christine. But stuck on classic rock instead of the
50s tunes. Any ideas for a replacement? Michael in Savannah

Yes, it's really cool having the Works on CD, opening up a manual,
printing the pages and not worrying about making them dirty. Sometimes
a person doesn't have all the -correct- tools or gizmos so one has to
improvise. The other resource I have used in the past are the technical
pages on The Pantera Place, which also contain nice photos and good
descriptions of procedures. Again, a nice printer, some blank paper and
one is all set for a good time in the garage.
