FWIW, I just purchased a set of ZF gaskets from Hall last week and they told me the same thing.  I was suprised at just how "paper thin" those paper gaskets are too.

I don't know about -any- application, but when I purchased a set of
gaskets and seals from Steve Wilkenson about a month ago, he cautioned
me very strongly to soak the paper gaskets in water for a day before
application, otherwise they would leak.

I haven't tried it yet but I have no reason to disbelieve him.
