[DeTomaso] Third fan / cooling problems at idle.

That's the point MD. Stock fans are lucky to provide 500 CFM apiece. By
adding a 3rd 1200 or so CFM fan to the back, it'll total to a little more
flow of your setup which you have proven is adequate.

My single sucker fan moves something like 1800cfm which is what I have
used on the back side of the Pantera's race cup radiator with no problems
for 2+ years.

Doesn't matter if I am at WOT on the track or an open road race or stuck
in traffic on a hot summer day. Mike Trusty and Dick Drenske who are both
mechanical engineers can confirm what I have been telling you slackers ;-]>
for 2 years.

My third fan suggestion to Chris is mainly for those owners who still
have
the stock front mounted pusher fans. IMHO, the stock fans have
insufficient
air flow capacity to cool the radiator. A centrally located, 13 or 14"
puller fan in the rear is a simple and inexpensive way to remedy this.
Such
1200 to 1500 CFM fans are readily available on eBay for $30 to $50. For
those who have converted to more powerful dual front pusher or dual rear
puller fans, the third fan is likely unnecessary weight.

What I have found is that if you have cooling problems at idle it is
most likely caused by insufficient coolant circulation, not by not
having enough air over the radiator.
The heat generated by the engine should be less at idle than at higher
    speeds. (I guess?)

mounted three different colored LEDs (which I bought at Radio
Shack--made
especially for 12 volts) so now I know exactly when each fan is
operating.
